Worldwide Press Freedom Index 2006

New countries have moved ahead of some Western democracies in the fifth annual Reporters Without Borders Worldwide Press Freedom Index, issued today, while the most repressive countries are still the same ones. Kazakhstan (128th), Kyrgyzstan (123th), Tajikistan (117th), Uzbekistan (158th).

The two worst violators of free expression - North Korea, bottom of the Index at 168th place and Turkmenistan (167th) - have clamped down further. In 2005 RSF rate press freedom as follows:
