The 2017/2018 Global Education Monitoring Report Launched at The International Conference On Future Education In Kazakhstan

Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) held the IX International Research-to-Practice Conference Values, Wellbeing and Innovation for the Future of Education in Astana, Kazakhstan on 26-27 October 2017. It is one of the largest educational conferences in Central Asia, focusing exclusively on pre-school, primary secondary and higher education, typically attracting around 1000 participants.

The conference brings together education leaders, thinkers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss research, policy and practice in education and plays a crucial role in driving the educational reform in Kazakhstan forward. This year, keynote speakers included renowned high-level education experts from Cambridge University, Singapores National Institute of Education, OECD and the World Bank.

The UNESCOs contribution was to launch 2017/2018 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) report Accountability in Education: Meeting our Commitments. Katarzyna Kubacka from the GEM team presented the report at the conference. The launch in Kazakhstan was among the first launches of the report around the world. UNESCO presented the report in Central Asia during smaller UNESCO events in the past.

The GEM Report is a singular, comprehensive, analytical and authoritative reference for the global follow-up and review of education. Its mandate is to monitor progress towards the education targets in the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. The 2017/2018 report investigates accountability in education, analyzing how all relevant stakeholders can provide education more effectively, efficiently and equitably.

Lina Benete, education programme specialist UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan led the UNESCO seminar on mainstreaming competences for the 21st century. It focused on the global commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 4, mainstreaming knowledge and skills for sustainable development, preparing and supporting teachers for the 21st century learning. She presented the Happy Schools project and Green School Asia initiative as examples of UNESCO approaches to mainstream the competences.

Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools is leading educational change in secondary education in Kazakhstan. Since 2008, it has developed innovative educational programmes, including for teacher education, assessment systems and educational resources.
