On 9 June 2020, the UNESCO Almaty Office organized a regional online launch event of the UN World Water Development Report 2020, entitled Water and Climate Change, for Russian-speaking audience.

The event was joined by 225 participants from 14 countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Afghanistan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. More than 500 people were able to follow the broadcast of the event on the UNESCO Almaty Facebook page, thus increasing the total number of people reached to 763.

In addition to the presentation of the key findings and conclusions of the Report, the agenda of the event focused on four main sub-themes of the Report: the impact of climate change on water in the context of regional cooperation; the impact on agriculture and energy; disaster risk reduction; and human health in the context of water supply and sanitation.

During the panel discussion with the participation of UNECE and WHO specialists, as well as regional and international experts, various aspects of water resources management and climate change adaptation were discussed, including gender aspects of water management, glacier monitoring in Central Asia, vulnerability of agriculture to climate change and others.

We need more science and more international cooperation to face the water challenges. This Report sets out avenues for action and cooperation, Ms Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General.
