A revised and updated version of the Manual for teachers on “HIV prevention in school settings” has been issued in Kazakhstan in Russian and Kazakh languages. The Manual is the result of a joint project of the National in-service Teacher Training Institute and UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office with support of Ministry of Education and Science RK.
The first version of manual was published in 2004 in limited number of copies. In subsequent years, the additional copies were printed with the support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria grant because of important demand from school teachers. In 2008, a workshop was held in which school teachers and representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science, discussed changes and additional information that should be included into the revised version.
The Working Group has revised and included additional information on statistical data, taking into account the current situation on HIV and AIDS in the world, Central Asia and the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the changes in the education system. The Manual includes a special section «Peculiarities of preventive work with the students in boarding institutions» that is very important part of the Manual.
This manual will help to improve HIV prevention activities in secondary and boarding schools. Training approaches presented in the manual are aimed at knowledge enhancement, development of skills and attitudes in order to maintain and improve the health of the younger generation.
