The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan signed the Law "On ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding the establishment of a Central-Asian Regional Glaciological Centre as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO".
The Agreement on the establishment of the Centre was signed in 2012 in Astana during the official visit of UNESCO Director General Ms. Irina Bokova to Kazakhstan. However, only a few years later, thanks to the efforts of the Institute of Geography of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the support of UNESCO and the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO, the Agreement on the establishment of glaciological centre was ratified.Central-Asian Regional Glaciological Centre is established in Almaty on the basis of the Institute of Geography of Kazakhstan to foster scientific coordination and exchange of information among different organizations in the region, involved in the monitoring of glaciers, snow and permafrost conditions in Central Asia; promote scientific research on climate change impact on glaciers and water resources of the region, as well as to enhance capacities of Central Asia specialists in the field of glaciology.
