Conference in Kyrgyzstan: Community media to promote good governance

18-19 February 2014 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty in cooperation with the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO and UN agencies: UNDP, UN Women, UNICEF organized national conference Community media and their role in promoting good governance for social justice. The conference is devoted to three worldwide days: Radio Day (13 February), Day of Social Justice (20 February) and Mother Language Day (21 February).

Community media are an important and effective tool for the involvement of women and youth in development of local governance, representatives of remote rural areas of Kyrgyzstan, in particular

The conference aimed to discuss the legal environment conducive to freedom of expression in rural communities of Kyrgyzstan. Agenda includes creation and support of community media, how to improve access and delivery of information to local communities through radio and multimedia technologies, on building effective multilingual communications with a gender perspective to improve participation of women and youth in rural self-governance.

During two days the 88 participants discuss cooperation of all levels of government, civil society organizations, rural media communities for sustainable rural development.

The Conference implemented in the framework of the joint project, “Operationilising Good Governance for Social Justice in Kyrgyzstan”, launched in October 2011 and implemented for a period of 36 months until October 2014. The Project aimed to increase and render more equitable rights to public services for citizens, especially for vulnerable groups - women, youth and children in 30 rural municipalities in 7 regions of Kyrgyzstan. This project is implemented by UN Agencies - UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women and UNESCO. The European Union co-finances this project together with the above-mentioned UN agencies.
